Chancellor of Austria Karl Nehammer.; Russia will win

Russian President Vladimir Putin is quite confident about his military struggle in Ukraine, even after Russian troops withdrew from the city of kiev, after weeks of significant progress. Says Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer.

Nehammer, the EU leader, is the first to meet with Putin since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. In an interview, Nehammer said his conversations with Putin were not "friendly" but "frank and hard."

"I think he is now in his own war logic. He thinks war is necessary to ensure security for the Russian Federation. He does not trust the international community. He blames Ukraine for the genocide in the Donbas region," he said.

Putin thinks he won the war, Nehammer says he thinks he believes he won the war. Nehammer said earlier this week that he was not very optimistic after speaking with Putin.

"I explained to President Putin his stance on views that no one else has," Nehammer said at a news conference in Moscow.

"Nehammer sees a kind of self-defense operation of the Russian federation. Putin calls it special military operations. I call it war," he added.

Russian troops withdrew from the area around Kiev earlier this month after failing to capture the Ukrainian capital and were hit again this week after the warship Moscow was hit by a Ukrainian missile and sank.

Russian troops regroup to carry out a new offensive in the eastern Donbas region.
